I love Barbara Bonney, and I've had the pleasure of hearing her 10 times and meeting her twice. One of the greatest singers. As a Lieder singer she is the best.

If this is indeed the Jonathan Miller TV production, Mr. Peachum is played by Stratford Johns. Historical note: when Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill made Die Dreigroschenoper, their free German adaptation of The Beggar's Opera in 1928 (to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the original), this tune was the only one that Weill kept, again as Mr. ("Herr") Peachum's opening number.

Could you explain? Do you mean the dénouement/end of the opera? This pot-pourri of popular melodies with new lyrics was a format popular in France called the "vaudeville". Some scores list the sources. This production seems a good reconstruction of Dr. Pepusch's original. I think we even had one or two of the obligatory vocal ornaments.

I am curious, as I am studying this, as to why none of the versions that appear on YT seem to go into the Ritornello at bar 93, and don't include the recitative at bar 100. I quite like the recitative in particular but ai have not found an opportunity to hear it. Any ideas from others ?

I actually like this approach to the Cold Song... instead of the trembling and pause on every syllable, which makes the words difficult to understand, the singer sings complete words but includes the trembling WITHIN the words. Highly nontraditional, but I like it a lot. You could call it the "stuttering approach."

Dear Opera.mad, thank you for posting. I found it fascinating to see Alice as the mature Nerone having seen her as the juvenile Nerone’s mother in Handel’s Agrippina. I refer to Bavarian State Opera’s production of Barrie Kosky’s staging in Munich, July 2019. Watch the video: www.operaonvideo.com/agrippina-munich-2019-coote-fagioli-benoit/ also @ disk.yandex.com/i/OeQyaEdiXotAMQ%EF%99%82?fbclid=IwAR2LMWhEylHNl7es4aOxZ28Kn_kMcIu79KB_xYNvrElvyafTOSXE1LQOmds I have watched it dozens of times already and still can’t get enough of Alice’s acting.

The music, yes!!! The staging, no. We wouldn't alter Monteverdi's music and we would do it more honor by aiming at period performance that seeks to complement rather than clash with it.

In my opinion this setteing based on splitiing by voices does not correspont to the music... in that music different voicec do need really work dramatically as separate units... they all express one and they cannot be represented each by one person. They add one to another to make 'a sigle person'
